Junior High Field Trip

ATTENTION STUDENTS AND PARENTS

 

For many years, J.W. Leary Junior High has sponsored a field experience to Boston and Washington, D.C. These trips have been extremely successful. The students and their teachers have found our Capitol a stimulating location for out of classroom exploration. Each group of up 50 students will be accompanied by 4-5 teachers.

 

PLACES:                   We may visit the Washington Monument; Jefferson, Lincoln, Vietnam,World War II, and FDR Memorials; Arlington Cemetery; Ford’s Theater and Peterson House; the Capitol Building; the Air and Space Museum, the American History Museum, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Native American Museum, the National Archives; the Holocaust Museum; Mount Vernon, and a baseball game.

 

SPECIAL EVENT:    One evening will be a dinner theater. This year we are going to Medieval Times.

 

TRIP INCLUDES:     Transportation, 4 nights lodging, 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 4 dinners, all sightseeing, insurance, all taxes, and a tour escort to be with the group. A ten to one student-chaperone ratio will be maintained.

COST:                      

The total price for this trip will be approximately $675.00. A $100.00 deposit is due by December 1st, 2016 but must be paid on given dates in October to guarantee a spot on trip (see Deposits). The deposit is totally non-refundable. Make checks payable to the Massena Central Schools. Students will be allowed to cut the cost of their trip by doing three different fundraisers. The first fundraiser will be a holiday citrus sale which will begin immediately. Oranges and grapefruits will be delivered before Christmas (just before or after Thanksgiving sometime). A second deposit of $100 will be collected in March to confirm number still going. The balance will be due April 23rd, 2019 right after spring break.

Students who are unable to finance the whole cost of the trip may apply for scholarship assistance through a Field Experience scholarship fund. The scholarship fund will provide partial assistance for those students who would otherwise not be able to afford the trip. Any student who would like to apply for a scholarship should see Mr. Czajkowski or Mrs. Gerace as soon as possible. The deadline for scholarship applications will be November 2nd, 2018

 

QUESTIONS:           A pre-tour informational meeting for parents will be held on Wednesday – October 3, 2018 at 6:30 P.M. in the Junior High School Cafeteria.

 

TRIP TIME:               Buses will depart from Junior High at 11:00A.M on Wednesday, May 8h. Students will need to pack a lunch. Our return from Washington will be Sunday.

 

REFUNDS:                Deposits are non-refundable for any reason. First deposit will not be refunded when a student is removed from the trip for academic or behavioral reasons. Total balance paid will not be refunded if child cannot go within 2 weeks of leaving. If, for any reason, the trip has to be cancelled all monies will be refunded.

 

 

 

 

 

DEPOSITS:   Deposits will be collected in the cafeteria on the following dates:

 

Tuesday, October 9th and Wednesday, October 10th

Teams 1 and 2 (7th Graders)

 

Thursday, October 11th and Friday, October 12th

                       Teams 3 and 4 (8th Graders)

 

Any deposits made after these dates are to be made directly to Mr. Czajkowski or Mrs. Gerace and students will be placed on a waiting list if we have met our bus limits for the number of students applying.

 

  1. Criteria for Student Participation

Academic Requirements:

  1. A minimum overall average of 80 and a passing average in all subjects by the end of the third marking period.
  2. A failing final average in and twenty week course (i.e. Health, Home and Careers, Technology I, Technology II, Art) will result in removal from the trip.

 

Behavioral Requirements:

  1. No referrals for any violent, threatening action, or blatant disrespect toward the administration, faculty, staff, or other students. Such behavior includes obscene remarks or gestures, foul or abusive language, harassment of any kind, or blatant disrespect of authority.
  2. No more than 5 referrals, academic or behavioral, prior to the trip and none in the marking period prior to the trip.
  3. No chronic behavior problems in unstructured settings such as the cafeteria, assemblies, hallways, field trips or school bus.

 

Attendance:

  1. Good attendance is required by all trip participants. If a student misses school or is tardie more than 18 days of school over the first 3 marking periods they will not be allowed to attend the field experience. (This applies to all unless there are extenuating circumstances.(i.e. surgery, severe illness, etc.) )

Whether a student meets the requirements will be at the discretion of the school.

Final decisions will rest with Mr. Oliver.

 

II. Expectations for participants

 

Students will be expected to extend their classroom exploration during the field study period. All homework assigned during the 2 days students are not in school must be completed.

All students will be required to complete a research project on a sight in Washington before the trip.   During the trip they must complete a booklet on things seen during the trip.

 

III. Registration procedures

 

Due to limited seating, registration will be decided by a lottery of all of those students that sign up late if we have met the limit for full busses.  The only exception will be for those eighth graders who did not go on last year’s trip. Preference will be given to them. A waiting list will be created using a lottery procedure. Those registering after the October sign up will be added to the waiting list in the order that they sign up and the last to sign up will have the lowest priority.
